Three Horrible Stories

Thu Jul 21, 2011, 12:52 AM
  • Reading: Read Real Japanese/Ed. by Michael Emmerich
  • Playing: Half-Life 2
I have to share these three stories because they bother the hell out of me.

*Item the First: So I was the checker for two older people... I'd say 50 or so. Suddenly, the woman says in a very quiet whisper, "I don't understand why people do that." She was staring hatefully over my shoulder. Her husband looked embarrassed. I turned to look. There was a family behind me; wife, husband, cute little girl about a year old. I couldn't figure it out for a second, because the kid was being good and the couple wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary. That's when I connected the dots: the husband was black and the wife was white. Was my customer seriously making a racist comment right in front of me?!

I couldn't be sure exactly what the woman was talking about, and it's not my job to be an asstard in response to asstardism, so I opted not to say anything. Still, the thought was horrifying. I kept an ear on the couple behind me out of curiosity, but seriously, totally nice, normal family. I hope to GOD that the customer was talking about something else.

*Item the Second: So I was on Den of Angels, one of the biggest ball-jointed doll forums, and looking up some info on face-ups. Then I ran across this:
"Good on you for doing your own face ups. They are a great bonding experience to have with your doll..."
:stare: HOW. DO YOU BOND. WITH AN INANIMATE OBJECT.

And then there's the way people talk about their dolls: "my boy," "my girl." Like they're talking about a living thing. It's... it's so creepy.

Why am I getting one of these
I will be lumped with these crazy people >:'C

*Item the Third: My friend bought the new BioShock novel for her Kindle, and is posting snippets of it on Facebook. IT SUCKS HORRIBLY. I am so bummed now.

First: Yes, she WAS making a racist comment right there in front of God and you and everybody. Old bitch.

Second: But you're crazier in a different and better way!

Third: I bet you're also thinking, "shit, I could have written this SO much better." ;P

1. Visit a middle school in CT.

2. It's like that with a lot of things. You know how guys are with their vintage hotrods, and such.

3. I'll just stick to the video games when I get the chance to buy anything related to Bioshock.

1. Racism, language, the usual. It's a very liberal state.

2. Well, they give names, but don't really talk about like they are alive, other than the mechanical aspect of being alive.

3. I'll get it for PC.

1. Guh. That's just... guh, darn it. I am sad for humanity sometimes. Okay often.

2. This must be how the 99% of sane people in the furry fandom feel being shaked up with the few crazies :( (or for that matter how the my little pony fandom feels for being shaked up with the crazy aspect of furry fandom.)

3. It's official fanfiction for a videogame, I'm really not surprised. You should read the stuff they realied for Baldur's gate. Holy. Freaking. Hell.

1. I want to punch humanity sometimes, myself.

2. The My Little Pony fandom just weirds me out wholesale, actually D:

3. SERIOUSLY?
Is there a single "fanfiction novel" that has ever NOT sucked?

1. Swift shot to the nads might do the trick.

2. I'm really only involved with the more recent Friendship is Magic craze so I can't speak for others but... yeah I think we are mostly harmless, there's just an unusually large number of us who are male and adult. I think the strangeness of the fandom comes from the fact that it genuinely is a very well written piece of entertainment and they put some damned effort into it, and I'm not usually one for singing the praises of merchandise driven kids toys. I wouldn't worry. The world gets far weirder.

3. Apparantly, according to the writer of the Baldur's Gate official novels, Imoen discovered her bisexualism by being raped by a female drow. I'm not even effing kidding.

1. Sounds wonderful to me.

2. I really, really don't understand the Friendship Is Magic craze at all! It's just a kid's tv show saying what all kids' tv shows say (being a loner is bad, everyone should work together, everybody is special, so on and so forth). The animation is better than usual, but... that alone shouldn't make a difference, should it? I'm especially boggled at how many people say the characterization is amazing. Maybe you can clear it up for me...?

3. I don't often wish violence on people, but whoever wrote that should be punched in the mouth.

1. May I go first?

2. I'll try, but I think this is mostly just going to be me waffling away at you... um...

There are a number of reasons why I think this show is so popular. I'll try and explain in less than an essay long comment. You might be better off checking out this link: [link] It's a rebuttal made by the exec producer of the show to a very badly researched article accusing it of being 'racist, homophobic and smart shaming', and she explains quite coherently what she was trying to do with the show, and where she thinks she succeeded and failed.

One) Look at this from the perspective of a student of animation who happens to be female. There's always been a gender divide in this industry. Cartoons for boys are predominantly action and adventure and rarely have more than one or two females (usually the love interest or annoying/cute/bratty younger sister). Cartoons for girls meanwhile are overwhelmed with 'stories' about boyfriends, make up, fashion, being 'popular' and stuff that I, personally, was not interested in as a child, and am a bit disturbed by the propensity of in the modern day. On the other extreme there's the pink, fluffy fairies and overwhelming cuteness and baby talk that, again, didn't appeal to me. Seems if you're a girl these days you're either a cute little four year old with cuddly toys or you're a teenager. There's no in between.

Countless pitches for animation projects are turned down because "girls don't watch cartoons" or "cartoons for girls don't sell". Companies do want to SELL to girls of course, and from their POV girls want make up, fashion and stories about boys. It's all Bratz dolls, barbie, tea parties, make up and sleepovers. Which is fair enough if you like that stuff, but it's all there IS. The girl who wants adventure and humor has to go to boys cartoons and thus (in my experience) gets laughed at. Yet it's the blatant and extreme segregating of genders in the media which has LED to there being no entertainment aimed at girls which isn't driven by the need to sell her parents mini make up kids and stilettos, and to where a boy can't even LOOK at a my little pony without being berated by his peers. MLP can't get away from the fact that it's merchandise driven, but maybe older fans appreciate it, in a way, as something they for whatever reason missed in their own childhoods.

And two) It's honest. Another trend in animation in the 90's was deconstructionism: breaking things apart. Cartoons were all parodies, exaggerations, pastiches, and toilet humour. Angry Beavers, Cat and Dog, Invader Zim, Southpark, etc, were all about laughing at what had come before. And at the time that worked, was perhaps even necessary because it showed our maturing ideas about how the world works... but it got old when it stopped making a valid point and started reveling in shock value for the sake of shock and grossness for the sake of grossness. People are bored and not a little disgusted, not by the toilet humor or parody per se, but by the fact that that's all that there IS anymore. Maybe now we've taken stuff apart as far is it will go, it's time to start putting it all back together better than before? They're recently been trying to revive more 'honest' cartoons. MLP is part of that attempt, I think: humourous and brightly coloured, willing to poke fun at itself, but still honest in it's storytelling.

There is value in those 'typical morals' that we've lost track of in our attempts to parody them to death. MLP is... refreshing. And adults can watch it with their kids without feeling like they're losing brain cells. It's actually intelligently written. Not perfect, but tries a damn sight harder than anything else for kids out there.

3. Oh, there's more. I grant nothing can beat the rape thing, but don't get me started on a female character who in the game was a determined, strong willed druid got turned into a simpering whining drama queen who screamed and stripped off when a spider fell down her armor (even though asides from being who she was she was also you know, a DRUID and more likely to have a damn conversation with the spider than strip in an attempt to get rid of it. Oh, and her husband was turned into a shameful adulterer.

I'm not a supporter of burning books, but...

I'm not sure if the characters are all THAT well developed (though they DO have an interetsing conception behind each of their personalities) but they're varied.
